One of my interests is rural development in the developing world. Currently I am supervising PhD candidates from Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and Jamaica. I have also supervised or am currently supervising PhD and Masters candidates from a range of South American countries, including Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay. Going back further, I have supervised students from Ethiopia, Indonesia and the Philippines. In general, I prefer candidates to address real issues of importance to their own countries. That means they go back to their own countries for fieldwork. Some of the work that they do is absolutely fascinating, and so I plan when I get time to write here about some of this work. Also, I might reminisce on some of my own experiences in these countries.
